Emanuela Samaritani was born and raised in Southern Switzerland. She moved to west Switzerland to study biology at university, then continued with a Master in environmental sciences. For her Master project she studied how the ecosystem functioning and plant community in a raised bog varied in time after restoration of the site.
She continued her academic career with a PhD, in which she studied how community of organisms and diversity changed in a floodplain, after restoration of the site. One of the groups of organisms she focused on was microorganisms.
Wanting to share with her baby girl what she was studying, she looked for books in children literature that would help her illustrate and explain microorganisms. She discovered that science books for children were not that interested in showing the beauty and importance of microorganisms. They are mostly focused on parasites and diseases. She thought that children deserve to learn more about all the beauty there is in the microscopic, and decided to write herself those books.
Beside writing books, she likes hiking, reading, practicing yoga, drawing, chatting with friends over coffee, cuddle and play with her children and her cat.
